Sustainability & Eco FAQ

MyEcoHome is a marketplace of independent vendors, and every listing is required to describe the materials or ingredients used in the product so you can make an informed choice. This page explains how to read the sustainability claims you see across the marketplace — what compostable and biodegradable mean, how certifications work, and what to look for in a product listing.

How to Read a Product Listing

Every vendor on MyEcoHome is required to list materials or ingredients in their product descriptions so you can make an informed choice. For example, our Compostable Eco-Scourers & Sponge Bundle is made from cellulose wood fibre, sisal, and loofah plant layers — all natural plant-based materials. When shopping, look for the “Product Details” section of any listing to find material composition, certifications (where provided by the vendor), and care instructions.

What “Compostable” and “Biodegradable” Mean

These terms describe how a product breaks down at the end of its life, but the conditions required vary. Compostable products (such as our Compostable Eco-Scourers & Sponge Bundle) are designed to break down in a home or industrial compost environment — however, composting results depend on your local facility and conditions. Biodegradable means a product will naturally decompose over time, but the rate and completeness of breakdown depends on temperature, moisture, and disposal method. Neither term guarantees immediate or complete breakdown in landfill conditions.

Eco-Certifications: A General Guide

Certifications vary by vendor and product. Where a vendor has obtained certifications, these will be listed on the individual product page. MyEcoHome does not independently certify products — we rely on vendors to accurately represent their claims. If you have questions about a specific certification, contact the vendor directly or reach us at info@myecohomemarketplace.com. Some certifications you may see on product listings include:

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — a textile certification confirming every component of the product (fabric, threads, buttons, dyes) has been independently tested for harmful substances.
  • GREENGUARD (and GREENGUARD Gold) — a certification that a product has been tested for low chemical emissions, supporting healthier indoor air quality.
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) — a certification for textiles made with certified organic fibres under strict environmental and social criteria, from harvesting through manufacturing.
  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) — a certification that wood, paper, or plant-based materials come from responsibly managed forests.
  • OK Compost / OK Compost HOME (TÜV Austria) — certifications confirming a product meets independent standards for industrial or home compostability.
  • BPI Certified — a North American certification for products that break down in commercial composting facilities.

This list is a general guide to common certifications only; it does not mean products on MyEcoHome carry them unless the certification is listed on the individual product page. Certification names and logos are provided by vendors.

Caring for and Disposing of Compostable Products

Care instructions are listed on each product page. For compostable sponges and scourers specifically: keep them as dry as possible between uses; to freshen, soak in boiled water, microwave briefly, or run through a dishwasher drying cycle. At end of life, place in a home compost bin or your local green-bin/organics program — check with your municipality to confirm they accept compostable materials.

Why MyEcoHome Focuses on Eco-Friendly Products

MyEcoHome was founded to give shoppers a curated, trusted destination for safer, more sustainable home products — without having to search across dozens of sites. Common household items like sponges, cookware, and cleaning supplies can contain plastic compounds, synthetic chemicals, or bleach-based treatments. Our vendors prioritize natural materials, lower-impact manufacturing, and plastic-free packaging so you can make choices that are better for your home and the planet.
